The company was founded by Josef Hardtmuth in 1790 in Vienna however the production of graphite leads was relocated to České Budějovice in 1848. In 2007 KOH-I-NOOR holding a.s. performed home and foreign acquisitions important for further expansion of both the company and the whole KOH-I-NOOR holding a.s.. The Holding incorporated the production plants PONAS in Polička and HEMUS based in Burgas in Bulgaria. The former HEMUS plant in Bulgaria now KOH-I-NOOR HemusMark AD has enjoyed a tradition lasting more than 80 years in the Balkans.
